What does the SCHS do?

Preserve and Protect.

The San Clemente Historical Society was created in 1973 to protect the city’s historic building from being demolished. Over the years we have successfully lobbied to xxxx. We continue to present the Society’s views to the appropriate governmental agencies regarding proposed major developments and legislative action affecting our historical environment. We have been instrumental in establishing xxxx, xxx, xxx on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as North Beach a Historic District.

Education.

A part of our mission is to unite all persons who are interested in the historical and cultural aspects of San Clemente in order to foster greater community appreciation and local identity. To do this we manage our social media platforms that provide regular anecdotes of our town’s history and we research and write articles for local news publications about various historic aspects of San Clemente. We send a monthly newsletter chronicling the historic happenings around town. And we provide resources to our community about San Clemente’s historic structures.

We work to foster an appreciation for our local history in our youth by providing Fishcarts and Fiestas, a book about the history of SC, to all third grade students, as well as provide yearly scholarships to high school students.

Events.

The SCHS is proud to be a part of numerous yearly events all over town. You’ll find us at the monthly Village Arts Faire, the annual Treat Street and Puttin’ on the Glitz local events, as well as Founder’s Day and San Clemente Day city events.

Archives.

We grow and maintain the collection of paper documents, photographs, maps, films, and computer records. We make these available to all so please inquire if you’d like to access our files.
